The 15-Minute Gourmet : Noodles
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1999)
Author: Paulette Mitchell
Average review score:

Not Authentic, but Certainly NOT Tasteless
This is a very attractively presented book on noodle recipes from a variety of regions. That's a big plus. I was originally looking for an Asian cookbook with noodle recipes, only to find that most included recipes for deep fried dishes that I tend to avoid, with only a few noodle recipes. Then I found this, and it offers variations on dishes from Thailand, China, Japan, India, Italy, and other regions.

Note that word "variations." Mitchell has simplified these recipes, and in some cases, has done some bold cross-breeding (adding balsamic vinegar to an Asian noodle dish, for instance). This will cause the "authenticity-minded" to cringe. Let them cringe, I say... these recipes are not only delicious, but almost embarassingly simple to prepare. That's a VERY BIG plus for many of us, who would rather make supper quickly, and have more time to play with the kids, write in our journals, or read "Harry Potter." Most of these recipes involve only whisking a few ingredients in a bowl, steaming the noodles, and then mixing in the sauce. The result? Very tasty, very attractive, and very diverse noodle entrees to please the palette. True to the title, they can all be made in 15 minutes or less. You don't need a whole lot of exotic ingredients either -- most of the more esoteric ones can be easily found in a large grocery store or in an Asian specialty food store.

I highly recommend this book to single people who want tasty meals but don't want to commit a whole lot of time to cooking for one, and on the other side of the spectrum -- busy parents who don't mind a mild snub to traditionalism if it means faster meals that are nevertheless scrumptious. Happy noodle cooking!

Adventure in Programming Techniques
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (June, 1987)
Author: David Mitchell
Average review score:

The classical reference book about text based adventure game
This is a book about how to write your own adventure games, mainly text based. It describes lots of design fundamentals together with pseudo-code for the actual implementation. It was written back in the 80's and focuses on Basic programming. Still, this book feels very fresh, probably because of the clear presentation of the subject. A "must have".

My friends are begging and praying: please sell your copy of this book to me! I won't, hopefully they can buy their own from Amazon.

Affectionately, Rachel: Letters from India, 1860-1884
Published in Hardcover by Kent State Univ Pr (December, 1992)
Authors: Rachel Kerr Johnson and Barbara Mitchell Tull
Average review score:

How did this mid-1800's farm-girl ends up in India?
While this true-life story can't compete with the constant thrill-a-minute excitement level of a fictional Tom Clancy novel, the wonderful realities and historical remembrances portrayed here provide a down-to-earth documentation well worth a few hours of your time. The editor provides a unique and historically accurate documentary of the little-known life of her great-grand-mother, Rachel Kerr, mostly from her great-grand-mother's own hand. Rachel was a young farm-girl who married a minister and spent much of her life as a missionary's wife in India in the mid-1800's, far from the family she loved so much. The editor initially provides informative and interesting historical background material about Rachel's youth while growing up in and around Hookstown, Pennsylvania. Hookstown is a very small cross-roads town located in hilly farm-country about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh near the state border with West Virginia. The details of her life in this area can be easily verified through numerous government and individual archive records available today. Even many of the physical locations in and around Hookstown can still be easily traced and located today. Hookstown has now grown a little bit and is an interesting place to visit; but it still remains an out-of-the-way place which doesn't put much stock in trying to keep up with the hectic pace of the rest of the world. After the background has been properly set, the editor then smoothly brings in the real meat of the story through incorporation of an extensive verbatim series of letters written personally by Rachel, coupled with historical commentary where needed. These original letters provide an unusual personal and emotional insight into Rachel's exciting but challenging life as a mother and as a missionary's wife in the extremely dangerous and difficult environment of mid-eighteenth century India. The brief story of how the editor encountered her great-grand-mother's letters is itself a fascinating one. The stories these letters tell bring a real-life perspective to us that the movies have never touched. I became particularly attached to the book when I found out that the subject is my great-great aunt, that all the people she describes are my relatives, and that I grew up in her hometown locale. I also have a large, beautiful cross-stitch done by Rachel Kerr in 1848 at the age of 12. I always cherished that cross-stitch, even as a little boy, but, until I read this book, I only knew that Rachel Kerr was somehow related to me. I found the same beauty and sensitivity in this book that I always admired in that cross-stitch and it confirms to me what a wonderfully bright, talented, and unique person this lady truly was. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: Jack Mitchell Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Andrews McMeel Publishing (November, 1993)
Authors: Jack Mitchell, Richard Philip, and Richard Philp
Average review score:

A Paradigm of Modern Dance Photography
This timeline of images from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater not only projects abundant talent, but is also an exceptionally outstanding collage of dance photography in that it seems to capture the true spirit and demeanor of Alvin Ailey as well as the rest of the dancers. Aside from capturing their intricate technical work and radial energy, Jack Mitchell's photography seems to breathe life into every picture.

Not only does this collaboration of photographs demonstrate the dancers' intensity and creativity, but the images themselves are captured from acclaimed performances choreographed by Alvin Ailey, Donald McKayle, Judith Jamison, Masazumi Chaya, and other well respected names in the modern dance world. This book definitely display's the company's growth and development, and similarly showcases numerous dancers (from Donna Wood to Desmond Richardson) which have artistically contributed to the company throughout the years.

I loved being able to become completely absorbed for hours with the various breathtaking extensions, leaps, and partnering which the dancers portrayed. All of the images are truly inspiring, and their essence of modern dance is a definite must see for artists & non-artists of all ages. This is a book that everyone can appreciate.
